The new Civic Integration Act came into effect on 1 January 2022. Read below about a number of important changes.

People who come from outside the European Union, Iceland, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland and live in the Netherlands for an extended period are required by law to learn the Dutch language and to learn how Dutch society and the labour market work. This is called integration. Read more about what integration is and whether or not you are required to integrate.

In order to prove that you have sufficient knowledge of the Dutch language and society, you must take an exam. Most people do the integration exam in the Netherlands, but there are also other ways to integrate.

The drawing up of a personal Civic Integration and Participation Plan (PIP) is mandatory. The PIP comprises all the information on how someone must satisfy their civic integration requirement. Would you like to know more about the content of the PIP? Read more about it here.

The Participation Statement Process is a mandatory part of civic integration and is part of the personal Civic Integration and Participation Plan (PIP). People who have to integrate are introduced to the core values of Dutch society and sign a participation statement. Read more about the PVT here.

In order to comply with the civic integration requirement, people who have to integrate must complete and pass the Dutch Labour Market and Participation Module (MAP).
